Throwing out the first pitch

Throwing out the first pitch

As any cartoonist will tell you, getting syndicated is one of the hardest things in the world to accomplish. I am very grateful to the wonderful team at Creators Syndicate for giving me the opportunity.

Some cartoonists will spend years submitting and resubmitting ideas for strips/cartoons.I was sure I was going to be rejected and was fully prepared to keep trying for however long it would take. I got very lucky. I threw out my first “pitch” and got a home run.

I submitted to Creators and in a rare and rapid turn around time had my syndication deal! It was truly one of the happiest days of my life. (Now every time a new paper picks up MazeToons, I add another happiest day to the list.)

There is a lot of things you put into that pitch to the syndicates. Lots of samples both dailies and Sundays, cover letter, bio, and other promo material. This is your shot and you want to make an impression.  I knew MazeToons was unlike anything that had ever run on the funny pages and I was going to have to really sell the idea. Creators took a bold chance on me and hopefully it will pay off for all of us! I’m in this for the long haul and hope to be drawing mazes the rest of my life.

These are the first four mazes I drew for my syndication submission packet.
